The study is the first comprehensive analysis of the state’s market for legal services in medical malpractice cases, based on data from the Illinois Department of Insurance that covers 18,000 cases between 2000 and 2010. The car accident legal representatives at Neinstein and Associates have actually offered Toronto and also the bigger Ontario area for over 45 years, along with a lengthy report of effective success assisting clients via severe injuries, crashes and insurance coverage claims. “There’s a tendency for people to think lawyers are just ripping people off,” he said. “They take a third (of recovery) for doing nothing . . . This is reasonably strong evidence that there’s a lot of added value.”

About 17 percent of the plaintiffs in medical malpractices cases for those 11 years represented themselves, but they received less than 1 percent of the total dollars recovered. The rest of the cases were handled by 457 law firms, with the lion’s share of the verdicts and settlements going to just 22 firms. All of them recovered at least $25 million, and 19 of them have offices clustered in a 1.5-square mile pocket surrounding the Daley Center.

The names are familiar ones. The top five firms by recovery for medical malpractice between 2000 and 2011 are:

Power Rogers & Smith, $216 million, with a median recovery of $1.1 million

Clifford Law Offices, $189 million, with a median recovery of $811,000

Corboy & Demetrio, $120 million, with a median recovery of $1.2 million

Salvi Schostok, $108 million, with a median recovery of $1.1 million

Cogan & McNabola, $95 million, with a median recovery of $652,000

Some of those firms were able to estimate how much of their total business the medical malpractice cases composed. About 15 percent of Corboy & Demetrio’s cases are medical malpractice. At both Salvi Schostok and McNabola Law Groupformed following a split with Michael Cogan in 2012 it’s about 50 percent.

The top 22 firms shouldered anywhere between one and 13 cases a year. Across all the top-tier firms, the top 10 percent of paid cases accounted for almost half the personal injury law firm total recoveries.

The study also quantified the perception that plaintiffs lawyers usually do not attend elite law schools, Hyman said. Almost two-thirds of the 56 partners at the top-tier firms came from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, DePaul University College of Law, Chicago-Kent College of Law or John Marshall Law School.
